Abele

History
Tropical Cyclone Abele developed in late November 2010 from an area of convection in the far northeastern portion of the South-West Indian Ocean basin, within the Intertropical Convergence Zone southwest of Sumatra. The system was designated a tropical disturbance on 29 November and was named Abele on 1 December as it organised and intensified while tracking south-southeast. By 2 December, it had reached its peak intensity as a tropical cyclone, with the Météo-France La Réunion office estimating maximum 10-minute sustained winds of approximately 130 km/h, equivalent to a Category 3 system on the Australian scale, with a minimum central pressure of around 973 hPa. The JTWC assessed peak one-minute winds of 150 km/h.
Abele never made landfall. It tracked entirely over the open Indian Ocean, remaining well clear of any populated coastline, including the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. As the system turned south and southeast ahead of an approaching trough, it encountered cooler sea surface temperatures and increasing wind shear, which caused rapid weakening. Late on 2 December, Abele crossed the 90°E meridian into the Australian region, where it continued to deteriorate. It lost tropical cyclone intensity on 4 December and dissipated completely on 5 December. No casualties or structural damage were reported.
