History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Abigail developed from a tropical low that formed off the southeast Queensland coast on 22 January 1982. Over the following three days, the system tracked northeast and then northwest, gradually intensifying. On 25 January it turned toward the southeast, reaching tropical cyclone intensity the following night. During the next three days Abigail executed a cyclonic loop before making a significant turn toward the east-northeast on 30 January. The system reached its peak intensity on 1 February, with maximum winds of 120 km/h and an estimated central pressure of 975 hPa, attaining severe tropical cyclone status. Immediately after reaching this peak, Abigail moved out of the Australian region. The cyclone did not make landfall and caused no reported damage or fatalities within the Australian region, making it notable primarily as the first cyclone of the 1981–82 season to affect the Queensland area.
