History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Adeline formed in early April 2005 in the Australian basin near the Cocos Islands. Tracked and named by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, the system crossed the 90°E longitude boundary into the South-West Indian Ocean, at which point Météo-France's Réunion office renamed it Juliet. Under that name, the cyclone reached peak 10-minute sustained winds of 220 km/h, classifying it as a very intense tropical cyclone and making it the strongest storm of the 2004–05 South-West Indian Ocean season. Before becoming extratropical on 11 April 2005, the cyclone passed near the island of Rodrigues, where it caused damage to corn plantations. The storm did not make a direct landfall on a major populated coastline. Adeline-Juliet's origin in the Australian region before crossing into the Indian Ocean basin made it a notable cross-basin system, and its intensity placed it among the more powerful cyclones recorded in the southern Indian Ocean during that period.
