AGNES
1994-95 season · AU199495_06U
History
Tropical Cyclone Agnes was a late-season system that developed in the Gulf of Papua near Papua New Guinea during the evening of 16 April 1995. The tropical low intensified quickly over warm waters and was upgraded to a Category 1 tropical cyclone early on 17 April, at which point it was named Agnes by the Brisbane Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre.
Rather than following a steady path, Agnes tracked erratically over the following days, drifting over the northern Coral Sea between Papua New Guinea and the Queensland coast. It continued to strengthen during this period, ultimately reaching a peak intensity as a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone, with an estimated minimum central pressure of 945 hPa and wind gusts near 165 km/h.
Agnes then began a steady weakening trend as environmental conditions became less favourable. It was downgraded to a tropical low on 22 April and dissipated later the same day. The cyclone remained over open water for its entire life and did not cross the Australian coast, and no casualties or significant damage were reported.
Agnes was the final named system of the below-average 1994–95 Australian region season, and its name was subsequently retired, later replaced by Ann.
