AMY
1979-80 season · AU197980_05U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Amy originated in early January 1980 from a cloud cluster over the Timor Sea. The system organised into a tropical cyclone on 5 January and initially drifted west-southwest before accelerating southward on 7 January, tracking toward the Port Hedland area of northwestern Western Australia. As it approached the coast, Amy's track fluctuated in direction before the cyclone made landfall on the morning of 10 January, striking approximately 110 kilometres east of Port Hedland. It was the strongest cyclone of the 1979–80 Australian region season, recording a minimum central pressure of 915 hPa. After crossing the coast, Amy passed close to the town of Goldsworthy, where it caused extensive damage. Total losses from the cyclone were estimated at approximately $25 million. Despite the severity of the storm and the damage it inflicted, no fatalities or injuries were recorded.
