History
Tropical Cyclone Ann developed from a tropical low that formed on 7 May 2019 within the northwestern South Pacific cyclone region, near the Solomon Islands. The system tracked southward before turning west-northwest across the Coral Sea, intensifying into a tropical cyclone on 11 May approximately 1,420 km east of Cairns. Ann reached peak intensity on 12 May as a Category 2 system on the Australian scale, with ten-minute sustained winds of 100 km/h, gusts to 140 km/h, and a central pressure of 990 hPa. The cyclone began weakening on 13 May due to increasing wind shear, dry air intrusion, and diminishing outflow, and was downgraded to a tropical low by 14 May.
As a remnant tropical low, the system made landfall near Lockhart River on Cape York Peninsula at around 2:30 p.m. local time on 15 May, before crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria and passing the Top End coast on 16 May. It eventually dissipated near East Timor on 18 May. Impacts were minor throughout, with no fatalities or damage recorded. Affected areas experienced heavy rainfall — including one 24-hour total of 93 mm — gusty winds, and marginal gale-force conditions near Willis Island. Ann was notably the strongest off-season cyclone in the Australian region since Alex in 2001, and the first tropical system to make landfall in Queensland during the off-season since Zane in 2013.
