History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Annette formed on 3 February 1984 from a tropical low that developed northeast of the Cocos Islands in the Australian region basin. Its development occurred simultaneously with Cyclone Willy in the Australian basin and Cyclone Haja in the south-west Indian Ocean. Steered by a ridge to the south, the system moved generally southwestward, intensifying to the point where the Bureau of Meteorology named it Tropical Cyclone Annette. The cyclone executed a loop during its track before crossing 80°E into the south-west Indian Ocean on 16 February, at which point the Mauritius Meteorological Service renamed it Jaminy. Annette formed part of the exceptionally active 1983–84 Australian region cyclone season, which was the most active on record, producing 20 tropical cyclones and 12 severe tropical cyclones in total. The season's most destructive system was Cyclone Kathy, which accounted for the majority of seasonal damage and the only recorded fatality. Annette itself did not make landfall on the Australian coast during its time in the Australian basin, and no specific damage or casualty figures are recorded for the storm during its Australian phase.
