History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Bernie was active between 1 and 9 April 1982, forming within the South Pacific Ocean basin during the 1981–82 cyclone season. The system reached severe tropical cyclone intensity and affected several island groups in the Solomon Islands region. Bernie produced widespread damage to natural vegetation and food gardens across Western Guadalcanal, Santa Isabel, New Georgia, and the Russell Islands. The storm also prompted the evacuation of more than 1,000 people from villages situated along the eastern coast of Guadalcanal. The 1981–82 season was considered slightly below average overall, with Bernie being one of six tropical cyclones to develop in the South Pacific basin that year.
