BETH
1975-76 season · AU197576_09U
History
Tropical Cyclone Beth developed from a tropical low embedded in an active monsoon trough over the northern Coral Sea, east of Cairns, on 13 February 1976. The low initially drifted eastward into open water, where warm sea surface temperatures allowed it to gradually consolidate. It reached tropical cyclone intensity on 16 February and was given the name Beth by the Bureau of Meteorology's cyclone warning centre in Brisbane.
Beth's track was unusual. Rather than continuing east, the system was caught by shifting steering currents as a high-pressure ridge strengthened over the Tasman Sea, and between 19 and 21 February it traced a long clockwise loop across the central Coral Sea. This manoeuvre eventually turned the cyclone onto a west-southwesterly heading aimed squarely at the southern Queensland coast. Beth strengthened as it closed in, reaching Category 2 on the Australian scale late on 21 February with an estimated minimum central pressure near 980 hPa. Maximum sustained winds were in the order of 100–110 km/h, while gusts near the centre and along the coastal strip exceeded 140 km/h.
Landfall occurred early on 22 February in the vicinity of Fraser Island (K'gari) and Hervey Bay. Beth then pushed inland over Maryborough and the broader Wide Bay–Burnett district, where friction and terrain quickly stripped the system of its structure. It degenerated into a rain depression and dissipated inland the same day.
The damage was concentrated in the Wide Bay–Burnett and Sunshine Coast districts. Maryborough bore the brunt, with more than 500 homes and commercial premises suffering roof and structural damage; trees were brought down and power and telephone services were widely interrupted. Rainfall of 300–400 mm fell in coastal catchments within 24 hours, triggering severe flash flooding along the Mary River and nearby streams. Heavy seas coinciding with high tides scoured beaches on the eastern side of Fraser Island, at Rainbow Beach and along the Sunshine Coast. Structural and agricultural losses across the district ran into millions of 1976 dollars, though timely warnings meant no lives were lost directly.
