History

Tropical Cyclone Blanch was a short-lived and unusually late system that developed in the closing days of May 1987. Its precursor tropical low formed on 22 May along a weakening late-season monsoon trough in the far northern Coral Sea, near the Louisiade Archipelago off the south-eastern tip of Papua New Guinea. Drifting slowly eastward over warm tropical waters, the low became sufficiently organised to be classified as a minimal Category 1 tropical cyclone on the Australian scale later the same day, and was named Blanch by the Bureau of Meteorology's Brisbane Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre.

Continuing on a generally eastward course into the Solomon Sea, Blanch reached its peak on 23 May, with an estimated minimum central pressure of about 995 hPa and maximum ten-minute sustained winds of roughly 65–75 km/h, with localised gusts near 95 km/h. Strengthening upper-level westerlies then imposed increasing vertical wind shear across the region, halting further intensification. The shear quickly stripped the deep convection away from the low-level centre, and Blanch was downgraded below tropical cyclone intensity on 24 May before dissipating over open water east of Papua New Guinea on 25 May. Its life as a named cyclone lasted only about 48 hours.

Blanch made no landfall. It remained more than 800 km off the Queensland coast and had no effect on the Australian mainland. Squally monsoonal showers and gusty winds were experienced across the Louisiade Archipelago during the system's formative stage, but there was no significant flooding, structural damage, or any reported injuries or deaths.

Blanch was the final tropical cyclone of the 1986–87 Australian region season.
