Blanche
2016-17 season · AU201617_20U
History
Tropical Cyclone Blanche formed during the 2016–17 Australian region cyclone season. The system developed in the Indian Ocean and intensified, reaching its peak intensity as a tropical cyclone on the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's intensity scale. Blanche tracked toward the Western Australian coast and made landfall in the region, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to coastal areas.
The 2016–17 season overall was considered slightly below average in named storm activity, though it recorded an unusually high number of tropical lows monitored by the Bureau of Meteorology. Blanche was one of nine named tropical cyclones during that season, three of which reached severe tropical cyclone status. The season was notably the second-costliest on record for the Australian region, with the bulk of damages attributed to Cyclone Debbie rather than Blanche.
Blanche's direct impacts included dangerous winds and rainfall along its track near the Western Australian coastline. While the storm posed a significant threat to coastal communities in its path, it did not produce the catastrophic damage levels associated with the more powerful systems of that season. The Bureau of Meteorology's TCWC Perth was responsible for monitoring and issuing warnings for Blanche throughout its lifespan as it moved through the western portion of the Australian tropical cyclone warning zone.
