History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Brian developed as a tropical depression to the east of Bathurst Island on 18 January 1980. The system tracked west-southwest and began rapidly intensifying late on 19 January. Brian continued to strengthen over the following days, reaching its peak intensity on 23 January with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h, placing it in the severe tropical cyclone category. Wind speeds of 110 km/h were measured approximately 50 km from the eye during its intensification phase. After peaking, Brian turned toward the southwest and gradually weakened, eventually dissipating on 27 January 1980 without making landfall. Notably, the presence of Brian contributed to the early weakening of nearby Tropical Cyclone Clara, which developed around the same time and experienced wind shear generated by Brian. No casualties or significant damage from Brian were recorded in the available sources.
