History
Tropical Cyclone Bronwyn developed over the Gulf of Carpentaria in early January 1972 and tracked eastward towards the Cape York Peninsula, crossing the Queensland coast on 7 January at a point north of Weipa.
Although Bronwyn was not a particularly intense system, it was a prolific rain producer, and its most significant legacy was widespread flooding rather than wind damage. Moisture associated with the cyclone and its remnants spread across an enormous area of the state, with roughly half of Queensland recording falls of more than 50 mm. The heaviest totals were measured in the ranges behind the north Queensland coast, where Paluma recorded an extraordinary 1,270 mm — about 50 inches — in just 48 hours.
Serious flooding followed across northern Queensland catchments. The Burdekin River rose sharply and inundated the Burdekin delta towns of Ayr and Home Hill.
Bronwyn came only a fortnight after the destructive Severe Tropical Cyclone Althea struck Townsville, during what proved to be a very active season in the Australian region.
