History
Tropical Cyclone Cathy was a short-lived system of the 1998–99 Australian region cyclone season that developed in the eastern Indian Ocean near Cocos Island, within the Perth warning centre's area of responsibility.
Its origins may be traced to a persistent tropical low that emerged from a monsoon trough over the Indian Ocean in early December 1998. That disturbance was first flagged by La Réunion on 4 December before drifting eastward into the Australian region, where Perth began issuing bulletins on 7 December with the low situated roughly 175 nautical miles west-northwest of Cocos Island. The system remained nearly stationary for about two days while gradually weakening, and bulletins were discontinued on 8 December, although forecasters continued tracking the remnants as they moved eastward to a position some 150 nautical miles north-northwest of Cocos. It is considered likely that this same low later organised into Tropical Cyclone Cathy.
Cathy formed in the waters near Cocos Island and did not affect the Australian mainland. It was one of numerous systems in an above-average season that also produced the record-setting Severe Tropical Cyclone Gwenda and the destructive Severe Tropical Cyclone Vance.
