CHLOE
1983-84 season · AU198384_16U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Chloe formed during the exceptionally active 1983–84 Australian region cyclone season, which produced 20 named tropical cyclones — the highest count on record at the time. Chloe made landfall on 29 February 1984 near Roebourne on the Pilbara coast of Western Australia, causing a range of damaging impacts across the surrounding area.
The storm's passage brought significant destruction to several communities. In the immediate landfall zone, three houses were completely destroyed and a further twelve had their roofs torn off. Floodwaters from the Harding River rose high enough to reach the lower steps of the local police station, forcing fifty residents to evacuate. Educational facilities were also affected, with portions of Wickham High School suffering severe structural damage. In the Cossack and Point Samson area, two buildings and a boat were destroyed, while the Dampier Yacht Club lost its roof.
Chloe was one of twelve severe tropical cyclones recorded during the 1983–84 season, a year dominated by the destructive Cyclone Kathy, which caused approximately 60 percent of the season's total damage and was responsible for the season's sole fatality. Chloe, by contrast, resulted in property damage and displacement rather than loss of life, but its effects on the Roebourne district represented a notable impact event for the region's coastal communities.
