History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Chris formed to the northwest of Christmas Island on 5 January 1982, during the 1981–82 Australian region cyclone season. The system drifted slowly southward before reaching cyclone intensity at 00:00 UTC on 7 January, at which point it received the name Chris. Over the following days, Chris tracked generally westward, steadily intensifying under the influence of a strong anticyclone positioned to its south. On 9 January, the system crossed 90°E and entered the Météo-France area of responsibility, where it was subsequently renamed Damia. Chris–Damia went on to become the most intense tropical cyclone on record in the South-West Indian Ocean at that time, achieving an estimated central pressure of 898 hPa. The storm did not make landfall in the Australian region, remaining over open ocean throughout its time within the Australian basin. It was the standout system of an otherwise average season in terms of intensity.
