History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Connie originated from a tropical low within the monsoon trough over the Timor Sea on 15 January 1987, making it the first cyclone of the 1986–87 Australian region season. The system tracked steadily southwest along the Kimberley coastline before intensifying rapidly as it approached the Pilbara coast of Western Australia. By 19 January, Connie had reached Category 3 intensity on the Australian scale, with a central pressure of 950 hPa and sustained winds of 155 km/h. That evening it made landfall approximately 30 kilometres west of Port Hedland, subsequently passing over the industrial centres of Dampier and Karratha before moving inland and dissipating around 23 January.

The cyclone's impacts across the Pilbara were substantial. A peak wind gust of 170 km/h was recorded at Port Hedland, where the storm's proximity forced a complete shutdown of Australia's key iron ore export facilities for several days. Structural damage was widespread across Port Hedland, Karratha, Wickham, and Roebourne, with residential properties unroofed, commercial buildings badly damaged, and power lines severed by debris. Heavy rainfall accompanying the system caused severe flash flooding that inundated river systems and cut the North West Coastal Highway, isolating Pilbara communities from road access for more than a week. Connie was responsible for the majority of economic and structural losses during the 1986–87 season, though effective emergency management meant no fatalities were recorded.
