History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Courtney first developed on 22 March 2025 within the Australian region. Over the following week, it intensified significantly, reaching peak intensity as a Category 5 severe tropical cyclone — the second of the 2024–25 Australian cyclone season to reach that threshold. Courtney subsequently crossed westward out of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's area of responsibility and into the South-West Indian Ocean basin before dissipating. The 2024–25 season in which Courtney formed was notably above average, producing 12 tropical cyclones and 8 severe tropical cyclones — the highest totals since the 2005–06 season. Courtney's peak as a Category 5 system placed it among the most intense cyclones of that active season, alongside Cyclone Zelia and Cyclone Errol, both of which also reached Category 5 intensity. As Courtney's track carried it away from the Australian coastline and into the Indian Ocean without making landfall on the Australian mainland, no significant direct impacts to Australian territory have been recorded in the available sources.
