History
Tropical Cyclone Daphne developed from a low embedded in an active monsoon trough near the south-western Gulf of Carpentaria during 21–22 February 1991. The system organised quickly, and the Darwin Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre classified it as a Category 1 tropical cyclone and assigned the name Daphne on 22 February.
Steered by a strong subtropical ridge lying to its south, Daphne took an unusual path, tracking steadily south-westward across northern Australia rather than remaining over water. It reached peak intensity on 23 February as a Category 2 system on the Australian scale, with an estimated minimum central pressure of about 976 hPa, maximum ten-minute sustained winds of roughly 110 km/h and gusts reaching approximately 150 km/h. Remarkably, the cyclone maintained a strong monsoonal structure during its long overland transit between 23 and 25 February, drawing deep moist flow across the Top End and the Kimberley.
Daphne emerged over the eastern Indian Ocean off the Pilbara coast around 26 February, initially drifting south-south-west over open water before recurving southward into higher latitudes. Increasing upper-level wind shear and progressively cooler sea surface temperatures caused rapid weakening, and the system fell below cyclone intensity before dissipating as a remnant low near 30°S on 28 February.
Because the bulk of its life cycle was spent inland, Daphne's main legacy was rainfall rather than wind. Widespread heavy monsoonal falls were recorded across the Northern Territory's Top End and the Kimberley region of Western Australia, producing marked river rises, localised flash flooding and road closures that temporarily isolated remote pastoral stations and inland communities. Marine gale warnings were issued for the Pilbara coast and the North West Shelf as the weakening system moved offshore, but offshore oil and gas facilities escaped damage. No deaths, injuries or significant structural destruction were attributed to the cyclone.
Daphne was one of ten tropical cyclones recorded in the Australian region during the slightly below-average 1990–91 season, and one of the few of that year to traverse the continent from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the Indian Ocean.
