History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Darian developed during December 2022 as part of the 2022–23 Australian region cyclone season. Originally a tropical low designated 05U, the system was named Darian upon reaching Category 1 intensity. On 19 December, it became the first severe tropical cyclone of the season, and through rapid intensification driven by unexpectedly favourable environmental conditions, it escalated to Category 5 on the Australian scale the following day — equivalent to Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. After reaching peak intensity, Darian moved westward and exited the Australian region into the South-west Indian Ocean basin. The system did not make landfall on the Australian coast.
