History

Tropical Cyclone Dawn was a small but intense late-season system that developed over the central Coral Sea in early March 1976. The cyclone originated from a low embedded within an active monsoon trough, and was named by the Bureau of Meteorology's Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Brisbane on 3 March. Moving southwestward across waters with high heat content, the system organised quickly and attained tropical cyclone status later the same day.

Dawn maintained a southwesterly heading toward the southern Queensland coast, steered by an upper-level ridge. Intensification continued through 4 March, when the cyclone strengthened into a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone on the Australian scale. Peak intensity was reached with an estimated minimum central pressure near 960 hPa while the system lay roughly 200 km east-northeast of Fraser Island (K'gari). Maximum sustained winds at this stage were in the order of 130–140 km/h, with gusts over open water estimated above 180 km/h.

The cyclone's approach to the coast proved to be its undoing. Strong upper-level westerlies introduced severe vertical wind shear, which displaced and eroded the central convection. Dawn slowed markedly, stalled offshore, and deteriorated rapidly into a disorganised low-level circulation, dissipating on 6 March without crossing the mainland coast.

Impacts on land were consequently limited. Outer rainbands and heavy swell affected the southeast Queensland coastline from Fraser Island south through the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay, producing squally rain, localised gale-force gusts and noticeable beach erosion from heavy surf. The destructive core winds remained well offshore. Marine warnings were issued for shipping lanes and fishing grounds off the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast, prompting fishing fleets and commercial vessels to seek shelter in protected ports and estuaries.

No direct fatalities were recorded, and no major structural damage occurred on land, largely because of the system's swift decay just short of the coast. Dawn was one of several cyclones in an above-average 1975–76 Australian region season.
