History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Dean developed in late January 1980 from a pre-cyclone cloud cluster and associated surface low that formed near Bathurst Island around 26 January. It was the third tropical cyclone to emerge within roughly a week from a persistent monsoonal trough stretching from northern Australia westward across the Indian Ocean. The system moved westward and intensified, reaching tropical cyclone status by 28 January. Intensification then proceeded gradually as Dean tracked west-southwest before the system slowed and turned southward on 30 January, subsequently accelerating toward the Western Australian coast.

Dean reached its peak intensity on 31 January, with maximum winds of 200 km/h and a minimum central pressure of 930 hPa, qualifying it as a severe tropical cyclone. In the early hours of 1 February, it crossed the coast approximately 48 km east of Port Hedland, Western Australia. The cyclone weakened progressively over land before dissipating about two days later.

Port Hedland bore the brunt of the impact, recording wind speeds of 130 km/h and sustaining extensive damage. Goldsworthy, Marble Bar, and Mount Newman also experienced wind damage, though less severe. Flooding between Port Hedland and Mount Newman caused significant harm to roads and the railway line. Total damage and associated industrial losses were estimated at approximately $20 million.
