DEIDRE

History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Deidre-Dalida developed in the Indian Ocean near the Cocos Islands, organising into a tropical cyclone on 20 December 1973 during the notably active 1973–74 Southern Hemisphere cyclone season. In its early stages, the system tracked west-southwestward, passing within approximately 25 kilometres of the Cocos Islands before continuing out over open ocean. At that point in its development, it had not yet reached dangerous intensity, and no damage or significant impacts were recorded on the islands or by vessels in the surrounding waters.

On 26 December 1973, the storm crossed the 80°E meridian, moving out of the Bureau of Meteorology's Northwest Australian area of responsibility and into the Southwest Indian Ocean region. At this boundary it was redesignated Dalida by the Mauritius Meteorological Service, making it a cross-basin system. After leaving Australian jurisdiction, the cyclone continued to intensify over open water, ultimately reaching the equivalent of a Category 4 or 5 system before eventually weakening over cooler seas. The storm never made landfall on any major coastline. Its significance lies largely in its trajectory across meteorological boundaries and its role as an early example of cross-basin satellite tracking, rather than any destructive impact on populated areas.
