History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Dominic developed from a tropical low located approximately 270 kilometres northwest of Weipa on 5 April 1982, quickly organising to reach cyclone intensity later that same day. The system tracked in a general southeasterly direction across the Gulf of Carpentaria, intensifying as it moved over the warm gulf waters. Dominic reached its peak intensity on 7 April 1982, with 10-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h and a minimum central pressure of 950 hPa, making it a Category 5 system on the Australian scale and the most intense storm of the 1981–82 season.
The cyclone made landfall near Cape Keerweer on the western Cape York Peninsula on 7 April, shortly after reaching peak intensity. Communities in the region bore the brunt of the impact, with significant building and power line damage recorded at Edward River Mission and Aurukun. Storm tides of 1 metre were recorded at Weripa and 1.5 metres at Karumba. The cyclone's broad wind field also produced damaging winds extending as far as Darwin and the Northern Territory. After crossing the coast, Dominic weakened rapidly over the peninsula interior before eventually emerging into the Coral Sea as a tropical low. Total damage from the storm was estimated at approximately $3.6 million USD.
