History

Tropical Cyclone Dora developed in the Coral Sea to the east of Proserpine, Queensland, on 10 February 1971. Over the following four days it tracked towards the southeast, moving steadily away from the Queensland coast, and weakened as it went, degenerating into a low pressure system well out to sea east of the Queensland–New South Wales border.

Rather than dissipating entirely, the system persisted and then redeveloped. On 17 February it regained tropical cyclone strength in waters east of the Gold Coast, and this time turned back towards land. Dora crossed the southern Queensland coast at Redcliffe, just north of Brisbane.

The landfall produced widespread structural damage in the affected area. Roofs were torn from buildings and power lines were brought down, causing disruption across the region.

Dora's unusual double life — forming, decaying offshore, then reforming and striking a heavily populated stretch of coast — made it one of the more noteworthy Australian systems of an exceptionally busy 1970–71 season.
