History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Doris-Gloria formed during the 1979–80 Australian region cyclone season, which was an above-average season producing 15 named systems, nine of which reached severe tropical cyclone status. Doris-Gloria was a cross-basin system, meaning it originated in the Australian region before crossing into the South West Indian Ocean, where it was renamed. This naming convention was common for storms that traversed the boundary between the two forecast areas of responsibility during this era.
The 1979–80 season was notable for several intense landfalling systems in Western Australia, including Severe Tropical Cyclone Amy, which struck approximately 110 kilometres east of Port Hedland in January 1980 and caused around $25 million in damage, and Severe Tropical Cyclone Dean, which made landfall near Port Hedland in early February causing an estimated $20 million in combined damage and industrial losses. Severe Tropical Cyclone Enid also struck the Western Australian coast that season, making landfall near Wallal in mid-February and causing significant structural damage, livestock losses, and injuries, though no fatalities were recorded. The season's most intense system overall was Cyclone Amy, which recorded a minimum central pressure of 915 hPa.
