Dovi
2021-22 season · AU202122_18U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Dovi originated as a tropical disturbance in the Australian basin on 4 February 2022, roughly 1,285 km west of New Caledonia. Over the following days it moved eastward, gradually organising as it tracked through the Coral Sea toward Vanuatu before crossing into the South Pacific basin. It became the third named system of the 2021–22 South Pacific cyclone season and reached severe tropical cyclone intensity.
Dovi did not make a traditional landfall but passed close to or through several island groups, causing widespread impacts. In Vanuatu, heavy rain triggered major flash flooding, overflowing rivers inundated homes and farmland, and more than 400 people sought shelter. Norfolk Island experienced wind gusts up to 92 km/h as the cyclone passed nearby. In New Caledonia, a mudslide destroyed a home and blocked roads, flights were cancelled, and a water release from the Yaté Dam killed one person and injured two others on 12 February. Peak gusts of 154 km/h were recorded at the Isle of Pines.
After weakening to an extratropical system, Dovi moved over New Zealand on 13 February, prompting 17 storm warnings for the North Island. Wellington recorded its wettest February day in history, numerous landslides struck the Wellington region and beyond, over 100 Air New Zealand flights were cancelled, and first responders handled more than 300 emergency calls. Total losses across affected areas reached approximately USD $84 million.
