History

Tropical Cyclone Ellie was one of the named systems of the 2008–09 Australian region cyclone season, an season rated as close to average in activity. The season ran officially from 1 November 2008 to 30 April 2009, and it was also the first year in which the Bureau of Meteorology adopted a separate "tropical cyclone year", spanning 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009. The Australian region covers waters south of the equator between 90°E and 160°E, taking in Australia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, southern Indonesia and the western Solomon Islands, with warnings issued by Bureau of Meteorology centres at Perth, Darwin and Brisbane, along with TCWC Jakarta and TCWC Port Moresby.

Seasonal outlooks released in October 2008 had been prepared against a background of a high Southern Oscillation Index, near-average sea surface temperatures and neutral El Niño–Southern Oscillation conditions. The Darwin centre anticipated an early start to activity in the Timor Sea and slightly above-average cyclone numbers across northern Australia, while the Brisbane centre expected a vigorous Australian monsoon.

Ellie followed the season's earlier named systems Anika, Billy, Charlotte and Dominic.
