History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Elsie developed after moving off the west Kimberley coast of Western Australia on 22 February 1987. The system intensified as it tracked southwestward over warm Indian Ocean waters before a change in steering currents redirected it sharply toward the mainland. Elsie reached its peak intensity at landfall, striking the eastern Pilbara coast near Mandora Station — located between Port Hedland and Broome — on 25 February 1987 as a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone. At landfall, the storm's central pressure stood at 940 hPa, and the weather station at Mandora Station recorded a peak wind gust of 222 km/h, which ranked at the time as the second-highest wind gust ever measured on the Australian mainland.

The damage at Mandora Station was catastrophic. Both main homestead buildings were so severely damaged by the violent winds that they had to be completely demolished before rebuilding could begin. Surrounding pastoral stations in the immediate impact zone also sustained significant structural and asset losses. As Elsie weakened and moved inland, heavy rainfall produced widespread flooding that temporarily disrupted local transport routes. Despite the destruction, no human casualties were recorded, largely owing to the extreme remoteness of the affected coastline. Elsie was the most intense cyclone of the 1986–87 Australian region cyclone season.
