History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Enid originated from a weak surface low near Victoria River Downs in the Northern Territory around 12 February 1980. The system moved westward and gradually deepened, recording a central pressure of 990 hPa by 15 February. It then intensified rapidly over warm ocean waters, ultimately reaching a central pressure of approximately 930 hPa before making landfall on 17 February about 25 kilometres west of Wallal, Western Australia.
The cyclone caused considerable damage along the Western Australian coast. At Wallal, windmills and buildings sustained significant damage, and cattle valued at over $200,000 drowned in the ocean. Further inland at Shay Gap, blocks of flats and houses were severely damaged, with many losing their roofs. Wind gusts near Wallal were estimated to have reached around 200 km/h. Substantial rainfall accompanied the system, with 115 mm recorded at Bonney Downs, 113 mm at Marble Bar, and 99 mm at Newman. Although minor injuries were reported, there were no fatalities associated with the cyclone.
