History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Frank developed during the 1984–85 Australian cyclone season, originating from an inland tropical low that tracked westward across the Kimberley region before emerging over open water. The system officially organised into Tropical Cyclone Frank north of Broome on 22 December 1984. Over the following two days it underwent rapid intensification, reaching its peak as a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone on the Australian scale, with a minimum central pressure of 950 hPa and 10-minute sustained winds of 155 km/h.

On Christmas Day, Frank encountered a steering boundary and sharply recurved toward the south-southeast, steadily closing in on the Pilbara coastline. On 27 December 1984 it crossed the coast just west of Port Hedland as a Category 2 system, having weakened somewhat before landfall. Because the storm's centre made landfall slightly to the west of the town itself, the most destructive conditions were avoided. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded peak wind gusts of 102 km/h at Port Hedland. Overall structural damage along the Pilbara coast was classified as minor, consisting largely of fallen trees, localised fencing damage, and temporary power disruptions, with no significant casualties reported. Frank is noted as a characteristic festive-season Pilbara landfalling cyclone, peaking at severe intensity offshore before weakening to a lower category at the point of coastal crossing.
