History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Grace originated from a weak low-pressure system that developed east of Queensland on 11 January 1984, during the highly active 1983–84 Australian region cyclone season. The disturbance moved northeastward over the Coral Sea and gradually became more organised before turning southward on 13 January and intensifying into a tropical cyclone the following day.
Grace continued to strengthen through 15 and 16 January in favourable atmospheric conditions, developing a ragged eye visible in satellite imagery. It reached severe tropical cyclone status on 16 January, at which point it attained its lowest estimated central pressure of 970 hPa. On the same day, a weather station at Frederick Reef recorded maximum winds of 130 km/h. Grace did not make landfall on the Australian mainland.
From 17 January, increasing upper-level wind shear disrupted the system's circulation, causing it to become exposed as it turned eastward. The cyclone steadily weakened over the following days and eventually decayed into a remnant low on 21 January while positioned southeast of Nouméa, New Caledonia. Grace remained an oceanic system throughout its life, and no significant damage or casualties on land were recorded in connection with the storm.
