HAROLD
1996-97 season · AU199697_15U
History
Tropical Cyclone Harold existed within the Australian region during the 1996–97 cyclone season, which was recorded as an above-average season. Harold was active from 16 February to 21 February 1997, developing and dissipating within that brief six-day period. The season during which Harold occurred saw tropical cyclone activity monitored by four Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres, operated by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology across Perth, Darwin, and Brisbane, along with TCWC Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.
Beyond its dates of existence, Harold remained a relatively minor and short-lived system. The available record does not indicate that it reached severe tropical cyclone status, nor that it made landfall or produced notable impacts on coastal communities. Harold was one of several cyclones that formed during a busy season that also included more significant systems such as Severe Tropical Cyclone Rachel, which struck Port Hedland, and Tropical Cyclone Justin, which caused considerable damage and loss of life across Queensland and Papua New Guinea.
