History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Harriet developed from a tropical low in the monsoon trough off the Kimberley coast on 24 February 1992, during the 1991–92 Australian region cyclone season. It was formally named on 26 February and intensified rapidly into a severe tropical cyclone early on 27 February, northwest of Broome. Tracking west-southwestward over warm waters with low wind shear, Harriet reached peak Category 4 intensity on 28 February, with sustained 10-minute winds of around 185 km/h, gusts exceeding 250 km/h, and a minimum central pressure of approximately 930 hPa. The system maintained a well-defined symmetric eye during this period.
Harriet remained well offshore throughout its passage through the Australian region, never making landfall on the mainland. Its proximity to the North West Shelf prompted precautionary shutdowns and personnel evacuations from oil and gas platforms, while the ports of Port Hedland and Dampier suspended shipping operations. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands experienced squally winds and heavy swells as the storm passed, though no significant structural damage occurred there. No casualties or injuries were reported.
By early March, Harriet crossed 90°E into the South-West Indian Ocean basin, where Météo-France took over monitoring and renamed it Heather. Weakening over cooler waters and under increased wind shear, it dissipated far out to sea by 9 March 1992.
