History

Tropical Cyclone Hector was a short-lived but significant system of the 1985–86 Australian region cyclone season, tracked between 17 and 24 January 1986 across north-western Australian waters.

Hector developed in mid-January and persisted for about a week before approaching the northern Western Australian coastline. The cyclone reached an estimated minimum central pressure of 982 hPa, placing it among the weaker to moderate systems of that summer, though its slow movement and heavy rainfall proved more consequential than its wind strength.

The system crossed the coast in the vicinity of Wyndham, in the eastern Kimberley near the Cambridge Gulf, before weakening overland.

Hector's most notable legacy was rainfall rather than wind damage. The cyclone produced widespread and significant flooding throughout the Kimberley region of Western Australia, an area where remote communities, pastoral stations and unsealed road networks are particularly vulnerable to prolonged inundation and isolation following heavy tropical rain.

Hector was one of a cluster of systems active in the Australian region during January 1986, a month that also produced cyclones Pancho and Vernon in an above-average season.
