History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Herman developed during the 2022–23 Australian region cyclone season. The system originated from a tropical low that formed in the Australian region before intensifying into a named cyclone. Herman rapidly intensified to reach Category 5 on the Australian Bureau of Meteorology scale, featuring a warm and well-defined eye at its peak. However, increasing wind shear subsequently disrupted the storm's organisation, causing it to weaken and ultimately dissipate before reaching the coastline. There is no record in the available sources of Herman making landfall or causing significant damage or casualties on the Australian mainland or nearby islands. The cyclone's rapid intensification followed by its equally rapid demise due to wind shear made it a notable, if short-lived, system within a season that was otherwise characterised by below-average tropical cyclone activity overall.
