History

Tropical Cyclone Hilda (2017) was a Category 2 tropical cyclone that formed in the Australian region and made landfall near the Bidyadanga Community on the Western Australian coast. An earlier storm sharing the same name, Cyclone Hilda (1990), was also a Category 2 system and was notable for recording the coldest cloud-top temperature of any tropical cyclone at the time, a record that stood until Typhoon Kammuri in 2019.

The 2017 event brought significant weather impacts to the Pilbara and Kimberley regions of Western Australia upon its landfall near Bidyadanga. The 1990 system, while not recorded as making a significant landfall impact, drew scientific attention for its exceptional convective characteristics as measured by cloud-top temperatures.

Both Australian storms reached Category 2 intensity on the Australian tropical cyclone scale, placing them in the moderate range of tropical cyclone severity. The name Hilda has been applied to cyclones across multiple ocean basins globally, including notable Atlantic storms in 1955 and 1964, the latter of which was retired following significant impacts on Louisiana.
