HUBERT
1984-85 season · AU198485_07U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Hubert developed from a tropical low that formed in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf on 10 February 1985, during the highly active 1984–85 Australian region cyclone season. The system organised rapidly and moved westward into the South-East Indian Ocean, maintaining a broadly westerly track throughout its life cycle. Hubert reached its peak intensity on 13 February 1985, achieving Category 3 status on the Australian scale with 10-minute sustained winds of 150 km/h and a minimum central pressure of 954 hPa. The Bureau of Meteorology and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center recorded notably different estimates of the storm's peak intensity.
As Hubert was intensifying on 11 February, its expansive cyclonic circulation, combined with an active monsoon trough, contributed to the development of a secondary low pressure system to its west, south of Java. This system subsequently became Severe Tropical Cyclone Isobel. Hubert maintained severe intensity for several days over warm open ocean waters before gradually weakening and dissipating as a tropical low on 19 February 1985. Its consistent westward trajectory kept it well clear of the Western Australian coast throughout its lifespan, and the storm caused no land impacts, property damage, or casualties.
