History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Ian developed as a tropical low in the Timor Sea on 23 February 1982, during a notably active Australian cyclone season. The system followed an erratic course, initially drifting west-southwest before abruptly turning eastward on 26 February back toward the Australian region. It reached tropical cyclone intensity on 2 March while positioned north of the Pilbara coast, then executed another sharp directional change on 3 March, veering southwest off the Kimberley coast. Ian attained its peak intensity as a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone on 4 March, recording a minimum central pressure of 964 hPa and maximum 10-minute sustained winds of 150 km/h while tracking parallel to the Western Australian coastline. The system subsequently weakened and made landfall near the North West Cape on 6 March 1982 as a considerably diminished storm.

Despite its offshore peak, Ian's unpredictable track through Australia's active northwestern oil and gas fields prompted a large-scale emergency response. Approximately 250 workers were evacuated from offshore oil rigs as energy operators shut down production across the region. When the weakened system came ashore near Exmouth, it still produced sufficient winds to down power lines and uproot trees in the town, disrupting local services. No casualties were reported from the storm.
