History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Idylle formed during the 1978–79 Australian region cyclone season. The available source material for this season provides detailed accounts of other cyclones active during that period but does not contain specific information about Idylle's formation location, track, peak intensity, landfall, or associated impacts. What is known is that the 1978–79 season was notably active, with thirteen cyclones tracked across the Australian region, collectively causing 17 deaths and more than $30 million in damage. The season was also historically significant as the only one in which reconnaissance aircraft flew into cyclones within the Australian basin. The most intense system that season was Cyclone Hazel, which reached Category 4 strength, while other notable storms included Peter, which produced record rainfall in Queensland, and Kerry, which became the longest-lived cyclone on record in the basin.
