Ilsa
2008-09 season · AU200809_18U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Ilsa developed during the 2022–23 Australian region cyclone season after a westerly wind burst led to the formation of a tropical low in the northern Arafura Sea. The system initially struggled against strong wind shear before being named Ilsa. It subsequently underwent rapid intensification, aided by jet interaction, and reached peak intensity as a Category 5 cyclone on both the Australian Bureau of Meteorology scale and the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale — making it one of the most powerful systems of the season. Ilsa made landfall northeast of Port Hedland on the Western Australian coast at its peak intensity. The cyclone's rapid intensification and Category 5 landfall made it a particularly notable event in the season, which was otherwise characterised by below-average activity overall. The 2022–23 season was the fourth consecutive year to record fewer named storms than the historical average, though it did produce several significant systems including Ilsa, as well as Darian and Herman, both of which also reached Category 5 intensity on the Australian scale at various points during the season.
