Irving

2017-18 season · AU201718_08U

Category 1

History

Tropical Cyclone Irving developed from a tropical low that formed southwest of Sumatra on 3 January 2018. The Bureau of Meteorology's TCWC Perth began issuing advisories on the system on 5 January, designating it 08U, after recording winds of 75 km/h despite the system lacking typical tropical cyclone structure at that stage. By 6 January, the system had organised sufficiently to be classified as a Category 1 tropical cyclone and was named Irving, becoming the fourth named storm of the 2017–18 Australian region cyclone season. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center subsequently assigned it the designation 04S. Irving's time within the Australian region was brief; TCWC Perth discontinued advisories later that same day when the cyclone moved outside the bureau's area of responsibility. No landfall within the Australian region was recorded, and the available record contains no reports of significant damage or casualties associated with Irving.
