History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Ivor developed from a shallow low pressure system along the South Pacific Convergence Zone, northeast of Vanuatu, on 15 March 1990. Tracking southwest into the Coral Sea, it acquired tropical cyclone characteristics on 16 March and rapidly intensified into a Category 3 system on the Australian scale. At peak maturity on 19 March, Ivor reached a minimum central pressure of around 960–965 hPa with maximum sustained 10-minute winds of approximately 125–165 km/h.

The cyclone made landfall near Cape Melville on the Cape York Peninsula on the evening of 19 March, close to its peak intensity, subsequently continuing across the western shore of Princess Charlotte Bay. After weakening to a rain depression over land, Ivor reversed course due to shifting upper-level steering ridges and re-emerged over the Queensland coast between Port Douglas and Cairns around 23 March. It is regarded as the most severe tropical cyclone to affect the Queensland coast north of Cooktown during the twentieth century.

Ivor's track directly over a section of the outer Great Barrier Reef caused significant underwater damage, with post-storm surveys by the Australian Institute of Marine Science confirming extensive destruction of reef slopes to depths exceeding 20 metres. On the mainland, the storm unroofed buildings, downed power lines, and damaged structures in remote Cape York communities. Its remnant moisture later contributed to severe flooding across inland Queensland and northern New South Wales, prompting evacuations of towns including Charleville and Nyngan.
