History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Jasper originated as a tropical disturbance in the South Pacific Ocean, first monitored by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and Fiji Meteorological Service on 2 December 2023. After crossing 160°E into the Australian region, the Bureau formally named it Jasper and classified it as a Category 1 cyclone on 5 December. It rapidly intensified, reaching peak intensity on 7 December as a Category 5 severe tropical cyclone with 10-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h and a central pressure of 926 hPa, based on post-cyclone reanalysis using synthetic-aperture radar data. Jasper subsequently weakened significantly under the influence of strong vertical wind shear before partially reintensifying as it approached the Queensland coast. On 13 December, it made landfall near Wujal Wujal on the eastern Cape York Peninsula as a Category 2 cyclone. It then degraded to a tropical low and was last tracked on 18 December over Cape York Peninsula.
Jasper became the wettest tropical cyclone on record in Australia, with rainfall reaching 2,252 mm at Bairds near the Daintree River over five days. Widespread flooding caused major disruptions across Far North Queensland, including road closures, thousands of power outages, and evacuations. One person died and another went missing as a result of flooding. The Insurance Council of Australia estimated damages of at least AU$1 billion.
