History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Jessie was a long-lived system that spent its entire life over open water during March 1974. It began as a tropical low embedded in a broad, active monsoon trough over the Timor Sea, between Indonesia and north-western Australia, on 16 March. Conditions over the warm waters favoured development, and as the low drifted west-south-westward it consolidated into a tropical cyclone on 17 March, at which point it lay roughly 350 kilometres north-north-west of Broome and was given the name Jessie by the Perth Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre.

A strong mid-level ridge over the Western Australian interior steered the cyclone on a consistent south-westward course, taking it parallel to — but well clear of — the Kimberley and later the Pilbara coastlines. Jessie intensified steadily over this stretch of its track, reaching severe tropical cyclone status (Category 3 on the Australian scale) on 20 March. Peak intensity occurred while the system was positioned well offshore from North West Cape, with a minimum central pressure of about 960 hPa. Maximum sustained winds at peak were estimated near 130–140 km/h, with gusts over the open ocean exceeding 185 km/h.

After peaking, Jessie continued west-south-westward away from the continent and into the central Indian Ocean, where it encountered increasing vertical wind shear and progressively cooler sea surface temperatures. The circulation weakened below tropical cyclone intensity on 24 March and degenerated into a broad remnant low the following day, 25 March, when it was last noted.

Because Jessie never approached the coast, there were no impacts on mainland Australia — no casualties, injuries or structural damage were recorded, and its destructive core winds remained far from Western Australian coastal communities. The principal effects were maritime: storm warnings were maintained for shipping across the North West Shelf, commercial vessels adjusted their routes to avoid the system, and offshore oil exploration platforms activated precautionary heavy-weather procedures, though none sustained damage.

Jessie was one of many systems in what proved to be an exceptionally active Australian region cyclone season.
