KATE
2005-06 season · AU200506_10U
History
Tropical Cyclone Kate was one of the named systems of the 2005–06 Australian region cyclone season, a season classified as above average for tropical cyclone activity. That season officially opened on 1 November 2005 and closed on 30 April 2006, although the regional operational plan also recognises a separate tropical cyclone year running from 1 July 2005 to 30 June 2006.
Like all systems within the Australian region, Kate fell under the responsibility of four Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres: the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's centres at Perth, Darwin and Brisbane, together with TCWC Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. Depending on where a system tracked, warning responsibility could transfer between these centres, and systems moving west of 90°E passed into the area covered by Météo-France on Réunion, where they were renamed and reclassified under that centre's intensity scale.
Kate developed in a season that produced a wide variety of systems across the region, ranging from weak tropical lows that never reached cyclone strength to severe tropical cyclones that caused significant damage on the Australian mainland. Several of the season's systems formed in the eastern Indian Ocean near the Cocos Islands and tracked southwest away from Australia, while others developed along the monsoon trough near the Northern Territory and Queensland coasts before either crossing the coast or paralleling it offshore. The season also produced cyclones severe enough to prompt large-scale evacuations, the suspension of mining operations and flight cancellations in the Pilbara, as well as extensive inland flooding from decaying systems.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued detailed significant weather summaries and post-analysis assessments for the season's systems, with several operational intensity estimates revised after the season ended. In at least one case, the name of a damaging cyclone from the 2005–06 season was formally retired from the Australian naming lists.
