KEN
1982-83 season · AU198283_04U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Ken developed from a tropical low within the monsoon trough over the Timor Sea on 26 February 1983. Moving southwest, the system rapidly intensified and reached tropical cyclone strength on 28 February. Ken attained its peak intensity on 1 March 1983 over open Indian Ocean waters north of the Kimberley coastline, achieving Category 3 status on the Australian scale with a minimum central pressure of 966 hPa and maximum 10-minute sustained winds of 130 km/h, making it the most intense system of the 1982–83 Western Australian cyclone season.
Following peak intensity, a shifting atmospheric ridge steered Ken southward, and it made landfall on 2 March 1983 along a remote stretch of the West Kimberley coast near Collier Bay. The cyclone tracked deep into the interior before weakening to a tropical depression and dissipating on 6 March 1983.
Because Ken crossed the coast in an extremely remote and sparsely populated area, no structural damage, fatalities, or injuries were recorded in residential communities. Destructive wind gusts affected open water and coastal islands, disrupting local maritime activity. Significant rainfall accompanied the system's inland track, causing widespread short-term flooding of rivers and streams that temporarily cut off unsealed roads to isolated pastoral stations. The relatively quiet 1982–83 season overall was attributed largely to one of the strongest El Niño events of the twentieth century.
