History
Tropical Cyclone Kirrily developed over the eastern Indian Ocean on 24 January 2000, forming roughly 350 kilometres to the east of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. After becoming a named system, it tracked on a west-southwesterly heading that brought it gradually in the direction of the Western Australian coastline.
Kirrily strengthened steadily over the following days and reached Category 2 intensity on the Australian scale on 27 January. Its estimated minimum central pressure of 970 hPa marked the storm's peak strength while it remained well offshore over open water.
On 28 January the cyclone changed course to the southwest, a turn that carried it away from the Western Australian mainland and removed any threat of a coastal crossing. Away from land and moving into a less favourable environment, Kirrily steadily lost organisation, and by 31 January it had weakened below tropical cyclone intensity while positioned approximately 900 kilometres west of Carnarvon.
Because Kirrily remained at sea throughout its life and never approached the coast closely, it produced no reported damage or casualties in Australia. It was one of several tropical cyclones to develop in the waters off north-western Australia during a slightly above-average 1999–2000 season.
