LISA
1990-91 season · AU199091_10U
History
Tropical Cyclone Lisa developed at the very end of the 1990–91 season, originating from a tropical low that formed along the South Pacific Convergence Zone close to Bougainville. Both the Bureau of Meteorology and the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre began tracking the disturbance on 7 May. The low drifted southwards through that day, steadily taking on tropical cyclone structure, and was named Lisa by TCWC Brisbane early on 8 May once it had reached Category 1 strength on the Australian scale.
Lisa continued to strengthen while tracking towards the south-southwest, crossing the axis of a high-pressure ridge and approaching a vigorous subtropical jet stream. The system then recurved on 9 May, turning towards the south-east, and was upgraded to Category 2 the same day. Peak intensity came on 10 May, with ten-minute sustained winds estimated at 110 km/h; the JTWC assessed one-minute winds of 150 km/h, making Lisa comparable to a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson scale.
Increasing vertical wind shear brought gradual weakening from 11 May as Lisa moved east out of the Australian region, with warning responsibility transferred to the Fiji Meteorological Service. No significant damage was reported in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands or Vanuatu.
