Lua

History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Lua developed from a broad area of disturbed weather that was first identified northwest of Australia on 8 March 2012. After several days of slow, erratic movement hampered by wind shear and competing steering currents, the system was named Lua on 13 March. A building ridge of high pressure to the north eventually drove it southeastward toward the Pilbara coast of Western Australia. Lua reached its peak intensity on 16–17 March as an upper-end Category 3 severe tropical cyclone, with maximum 10-minute sustained winds of 155 km/h and a central pressure of 935 hPa. At around 0700 UTC on 17 March, it made landfall near the remote community of Pardoo, approximately 150 km east-northeast of Port Hedland, while still at peak strength. The cyclone weakened steadily as it moved south through inland Western Australia, dropping below tropical cyclone intensity on 18 March near Wiluna.
Because the landfall area was sparsely populated, physical damage was largely confined to the Pardoo Roadhouse and several cattle stations, where structures were damaged and trees brought down. The broader economic impact was more significant: the Port of Port Hedland closed for roughly 52 hours, iron ore exports fell 4.7% compared to the previous month, and national oil production dropped by around 25% during the storm's approach. Total losses to the natural resources sector were estimated at approximately $217 million AUD. The cyclone name Lua was subsequently retired.
